Definition of Work

Performs intermediate technical work providing administrative and planning related duties in support of daily community development services operations, and related work as apparent or assigned.  Work is performed under the Community Planner II or Managing Director of Saehr Consulting.

 

Position Details

As a Community Planner, you must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required for Saehr Consulting. How you’ll use your strengths every day

  • All community development service positions provide support for all functions based upon time available, so every position remains flexible in providing assistance to all departments of Saehr Consulting.

  • Provides assistance to community development services, primarily drafting documents of building and zoning for contracted communities.

  • Provides general information to contractors, engineers, and the general public relating to the policies and procedures applicable to permits, building and related construction codes, and zoning and subdivision ordinances.

  • Provides general information to clients, property owners, investors, real estate developers, and other interested parties.

  • Reviews and approves applications for permits, licenses, and all other submittals relating to contracted services with communities.

  • Reviews, assists, and processes land use applications such as plats, site plans, building and zoning permits, variances, vacations under the direction of the Community Planner II or Managing Director of Saehr Consulting.

  • Assists with code enforcement activities.

  • Constructs, reviews, and responds to Requests for Proposals (RFPs) for continued work of Saehr Consulting.

  • Coordinates and implements plans, policies, ordinance amendments; conducts technical research.

  • Utilizes community GIS systems; prepares graphics and maps for written reports and presentations.

  • Prepares planning reports, minutes, statements, and memos.

  • Organizes public hearing notices, publications, public notices and affidavits of mailing, press releases, agenda packets, and related documents and services.

  • Serves as staff support to various Boards and Commissions under the direction of the Community Planner II or Managing Director of Saehr Consulting.

  • Assists with neighborhood and community development related meetings, as necessary.

  • Maintains files relating to community development services for clients.

  • Provides assistance in general communication updates to Saehr Consulting website and other applicable systems.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

What you’ll bring to help you be successful

  • Associates or Technical Degree, preferably in Administration/Zoning/Construction Management.

  • Experience in clerical service including customer contact and working with building permit technician or community development service duties, or equivalent combination of education and experience. 

  • SSTS License through MPCA as an Inspector and/or Designer for Type I – Type III systems ≤ 2,500 gpd (or complete within 18 months)

  • A valid Minnesota Driver's License or be eligibility to be licensed in the State of Minnesota.

  • A background or interest in local government.

  • An interest in developing what you do best and a commitment to valuing each colleague for their unique perspectives.

Thorough knowledge of Saehr Consulting policies and procedures; general knowledge of the laws, ordinances, and regulations underlying a community organization regarding zoning and general community development services; skill in the use of personal computers, associated software packages, hardware, and job-specific peripheral equipment; skill in handling customer complaints and general information requests regarding various services through phone and or/or personal contact; skill and ability to work with basic mathematical calculations and keep track of money and receipts; ability to learn and apply building and related development codes and zoning regulations; ability to understand and comply with Open Meeting Law and Data Practices Actability to interpret and apply policies, regulations and procedures; ability to learn and apply basic terms, materials, and practices involved in general building construction; ability to handle private and confidential information with discretion; ability to work with limited supervision and as part of a team; ability to work under time constraints; ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form; ability to utilize work time properly and productively; ability to act in a decisive manner, using good judgment; ability to use tact and diplomacy and to promote a cooperative atmosphere within the organization’s operations as well as with the public; ability to present an attitude of professionalism while maintaining the values and attitudes of the community; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, other departments within Saehr Consulting.

Physical Requirements

This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing and using hands, frequently requires sitting and occasionally requires standing, walking, reaching with hands and arms, lifting and repetitive motions; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
